Wash
April 4 - May 3, 2008
Opens Friday, April 4, 6 - 9 pm

Giftshop Project Space presents Wash, Nathaniel Robinson's second solo exhibition in Chicago. Featuring a video projection and floor installation, Wash fills the entire space of the gallery. Comprised of contradictory illusions, Robinson's recent videos simultaneously establish and dissolve a sense of visual logic. Presenting sequences that are impossible and convincing, Robinson's work questions the limits of human perception.

v2-wash (2007) is a stop motion animation, depicting waves of rock moving across a flat surface. The two-minute video is meant to be viewed multiple times, allowing a careful viewer to absorb details that are not initially apparent. Although the set-up seems simple, the framed view of the camera fails to reveal the inner-workings of Robinson's undulating rocks. The installation creates an environment that is at once immersive and disorienting.

Nathaniel Robinson (Cranston, RI, 1980) lives and works in New York City. Robinson received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a Jacob K. Javits Fellow. Selected exhibitions include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Linda Warren Gallery, Chicago; Gahlberg Gallery, College of DuPage, Glen Ellyn; and Gallery Agniel, Providence.
