Our Them / Their Them June 6 - 28, 2008 Opens Friday, June 6, 6-9pm
Giftshop Project Space presents Our Them / Their Them, Geoff Grace's first solo exhibition in Chicago. A Day is Coming When the Lands Will Gather Close Again is a mural of the continents rejoining, an inside-out Pangea. With watery clay applied directly on the wall, the drawing smells of earth. For the show at Giftshop, the continents drawing will be paired with a series of photographs -- portraits of Grace's friends, relatives, and co-workers. Grace displays two headshots per person: a straightforward print; and a laterally reversed print, a mirror image. Creating the photographs requires a genuine connection and establishment of trust between two individuals. The continents drawing is beyond the scale of the individual. Both works emphasize duality and empathy. The installation creates a meditative environment that is not analytic but poetic.
Geoff Grace (Silver Spring, MD, 1974) is a highly active member of the Baltimore art and music scene. Grace received an MAT from Maryland Institute College of Art and a BS from UCLA. Selected exhibitors in Baltimore include the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Maryland Art Place, Gallery Four, and School 33 Art Center. Grace has also participated in various public art projects in Baltimore.
Our Them / Their Them will be Giftshop's final show. 1039 W Lake is up for sale; and, the galleries within are closing. Giftshop Project Space will turn back into a closet. Plans are being made for a closing party, with a performance by Grace's band, The Tall Grass.
